It is certainly the case that there are untold amounts of young pupils in some countries who decide to take a gap year between accomplishing senior high school and starting university studies. However, this could be a double-edged sword for those students. In the following essay, the positive aspects and negative aspects of taking a gap year will be elucidated.

In terms of the positive effects, taking a gap year renders students more spare time to know themselves and discover the domains they are truly into. Take pupils in Asia for example, most of the students don't have leisure time to contemplate their interest because schools and parents will cram students with an abundance of assignments and exams for the purpose of performing well on the college entrance exam. Hence, a gap year after graduating from high school will be an opportunity for them to look deeply into themselves. What's more, having a gap year requires students to plan wisely and precisely for their spare time, which boosts their scheduling ability. Lastly, after a gap year, if planned appropriately, students may have broadened their horizons and ameliorated their time management skills.

However, as for the drawbacks of taking a gap year, it isn't suitable for everyone. If the students are not self-disciplined, and can't manage their time well, having a gap year may probably be a waste of time and culminate in finding meaning less. Last but not least, spending a year on a tour may cost students and their parents a colossal fortune.

In conclusion, notwithstanding that many students today are looking forward to taking a gap year due to its advantages that may benefit their future, it also has a number of drawbacks.
