Whether advertising is beneficial to our society as a whole is certainly up for debate. In the following essay, I will discuss both sides of this issue and conclude by shedding light on my point of view.
It is often argued that advertising may boost our economy. One reason is that advertising encourages us to buy things in an undetectable way. For instance, since most people love new things rather than the old ones, when we see a new product with a sensuous outlook and pragmatic functions, we people will want to buy it even though we don't actually need it. By the time we buy new things, we indirectly enhance the economy a little bit. What's more, advertisements not only color the city but also nourish the soul in our daily life. Well-designed advertising usually fits in our city and makes it attractive, which will weather our soul and emotions. According to a study pertinent to consumer behavior, people tend to buy things without hesitation when they are exhilarated. As a result, a nice advertisement can truly boost the economy. Thirdly, an advertisement recommends people to get new items by sharing the latest knowledge and information that show the advantage of using their new product. For example, the air conditioner company often promotes their products by saying how their air conditioner saves energy, which is environmentally-friendly and money-saving. By doing so, many people will substitute the old one for the new one, which will truly robust the economy and save our world simultaneously.
In contrast, opponents of this view maintain that advertisement advocates consumerism in our society, which has negative impacts on our society. According to this view, indeed, as I mentioned above, people tend to buy more things due to the advertisement, which means people become more rapacious after they see the advertisement. Last but not least, people who cannot control themselves might spend beyond their budget and end up breaking up. Accordingly, advertising would probably do harm to our society to some extent.
In conclusion, although whether advertising is good for our society is clearly a thorny issue, I would take a more balanced view of these two disparate opinions. The main reason is that advertising is beneficial to our economy and society. In terms of consumerism, people should know how to control their consumer behavior rather than being controlled by advertisements. Therefore, I personally believe that a suitable amount of advertising will enhance our economy and people who tend to spend too much money should be blamed for themselves not the advertisement.
